How to Get Rid of Spiders in the House

With their eight legs and innumerable, unseen eyes, spiders are a common pest that strike fear in many homeowners. No matter how much we read about their helpful assistance in getting rid of other smaller pests in the home, keeping a spider web hanging in the corner isn’t appealing.

Homeowners who are particularly disturbed by the presence of spiders are constantly trying to figure out how to get rid of spiders in the house and keep them from coming back. Fortunately, spiders are not a particularly difficult pest to get rid of, as long as the right preventative measures are taken and a few spider control tactics are put in place. Here are a few pest control tips that work against spiders:

De-clutter and refresh

Spiders seek out small and cramped spaces that give them an optimal hiding place to build webs, lay eggs, and capture other small pests, like ants and mites. This makes closets, garages, storage basements, attics, and even kitchen pantries prime and ideal locations.

By de-cluttering and removing the dust, spiders have less of an incentive to construct their webs. Wash and hang clothes that have piled up (it’s also a good idea to wash them in hot water, especially if they’ve been sitting on the ground for a long time; spiders could have laid their eggs!) Throw out anything you don’t need in storage closets and organize the remainders neatly in boxes. Afterwards, sweep up the dust and vacuum any remnants. If it hasn’t been cleaned in a long time, chances are there are plenty of spider webs lingering in the corner. Get rid of them immediately, for they may also contain eggs.

Get rid of other pests

Spiders, like most pests, only enter homes when they have found a viable food source present. Fortunately, spiders don’t feed on human food, not even garbage contents. Unfortunately, they feed on the pests that do. Ants, flies, moths, mites, and ticks are only some of the pests spiders feed on. Combined with the protective barriers and hidden corners found in human homes, it’s little wonder why spiders establish themselves here.

If you have ants, set up glue traps or spray ant pesticide. If you have moths or mosquitoes, turn off the porch lights to prevent spiders from building a web nearby. Getting rid of other pests is the best and most certain way to get rid of spiders in the house.

In the event the spiders are unperturbed by your spider control methods, contact a local pest exterminator who has better knowledge on how to get rid of spiders in homes through other means.
