Gophers
A cousin of the rat and mouse, the gopher is a small rodent that builds its home deep underground. Gophers are usually about 5 to 7 inches long and have sharp claws that allow them to easily dig through the dirt; they feed mainly on plant roots and grasses. They are usually found living in large communities and together, they build extensive underground colonies. These colonies can sometimes spread several hundred feet and be several feet below ground.
Although often thought of as non-threatening animals, gophers can be a major pest if they build their colonies in your yard or garden. Their colonies can disrupt the growth of grass and other plants. Their activity is usually accompanied by dirt mounds, which can be unsightly and damaging to turf. Gopher removal usually involves trapping the pests since it is illegal to kill them in most states.
