Fruit Flies
Fruit flies are named after their favorite food: fruit. These insects feed on fruit in all forms, from rotting fruit in garbage cans to fresh fruit to fruit plants. Fruit flies lay their larvae on the leaves of fruit plants and new hatchlings feed directly on these plants. Because of this, they are not only a household pest, but can also be a serious threat to gardeners and farmers. The olive fruit, for example, is capable of destroying 100 percent of a farmer’s olive crop for the season.
Fruit flies are usually very easily recognized by their bright red eyes and yellowish bodies. They have a very short lifespan, usually no more than a week, and because of this, they reproduce very quickly. This can make their extermination very difficult because they are constantly regenerating.
