Bed Bugs
“Night, night. Sleep tight. Don’t let the bed bugs bite!” We probably remember our mother saying this to us when we were children, after she tucked us in bed at night, right? Well, Mom knew exactly what she was talking about: Bed bugs do exist and they do bite!
Belonging to the Cimicidae family, bed bugs feed on human blood or any other warm-blooded animal. They live in mattresses, sofas and any other furniture (hence the name), and they are active at night (although not considered completely nocturnal). They are attracted to carbon dioxide and warm temperatures, and they penetrate their host’s skin with two hollow tubes. They feed for about five minutes, and then return to their place of hiding. Most individuals who have been bitten treat the area with hydrocortisone or an antihistamine.
